Blockbuster Since Then
Self-initiated research project about former Blockbuster buildings after one year of its bankruptcy in the United Kingdom. On December 16, 2013, Blockbuster, the US-based video, DVD and games rental chain, announced that the all the company’s remaining stores in the UK would cease operations completely. A vast number of data storage devices had been sold since the 1970s. However, few of them survive in actual use today. The bankruptcy of Blockbuster is a symbolic example of technological obsolescence. This project captures a shifting moment of culture and society and asks us to reflect on ourselves, who must constantly re-contextualize and relocate our individuality within new ways of living and new concepts of values.
Nominated for the Steidl Japanese Photobook Award and exhibited at the Tokyo Art Book Fair 2016.
